GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) - The Green Bay Packers continued their Military Appreciation Week events on Thursday with the Veteran Integration Program. Coinciding with World Mental Health Day, the Mark Divine Courage Foundation came to Lambeau Field for the event from noon until 6 p.m. The event was intended to provide veterans with the essential training to mitigate negative mental health effects. "We focused on helping veterans learn skills to mitigate the effects of post-traumatic stress," U.S. Navy Veteran and Mark Divine Courage Foundation support coach David Weber said. The participants were taught and practiced exercises to help ease their minds throughout everyday life. "We do breath work awareness, learning how to relax the body and learning how to setup a daily schedule so they can have an enjoyable, empowering day," Weber said. "There's veterans and representatives from various non-profits around the state here." According to the National Center for PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), PTSD is more common among veterans than those in the general population. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website, at some point in their life, seven out of 100 veterans will have PTSD. "One of the key things about post-traumatic stress is that there's always a stigma around mental health, getting the training and talking about it," Weber said. "The more opportunities we have like this where they can be casual in non-clinical type environments, the people that really need the help will come to these events and pass down skills to other people." The Packers will conclude Military Appreciation Week's events on Friday with two more events, one being the continuation of the Veteran Integration Program from Thursday, and the other a Salute to Service Tournament. The tournament will feature teams made up of several military branches that will compete in a flag football tournament at Titletown's football field.
