FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - The sun's active pattern continues and, with many charged particles on their way to interact with the Earth's atmosphere Thursday night into Friday morning (October 10-11), conditions are looking promising for skywatchers around northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio to view the northern lights. A clear sky tonight will allow any colors to be easily spotted. All you have to do is go outside and look up. You may need to have some patience. (Being away from city lights will help.) If the colors are out there...you will see them. While you can look north, the colors may be seen in other directions, too. Northern lights viewing forecast for northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio Who could see northern lights Thursday thanks to ‘severe’ geomagnetic storm? In order to get a nice sky show this far south on the globe, we need to have values on the Kp scale of 8 or 9 (it's the scale that measures the amount of geomagnetic activity that's forecasted to interact with the Earth's magnetic field). Our peak vales from Thursday into Friday are forecasted to reach 8.
