EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Las Cruces Police Department (LCPD) is hosting a pair of shopping cart collection initiatives at two locations on Thursday, Oct. 10, and Tuesday, Oct. 15, the police department said in a press release. The Police Department says the initiative is an opportunity for anyone who is in possession of a shopping cart to return it without consequences. "Officers will accept the shopping carts and they will not take any enforcement action during the initiative," the Police Department said. The two shopping cart collection sites are listed below. Shopping carts can be returned at either site on either day and officers will be present. Police will then contact businesses so that the shopping carts can be retrieved. From 10 a.m. through 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10 at Community of Hope, 999 W. Amador Ave.From 10 a.m. through 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15 at the parking lot at the 2200 block of East Lohman Avenue near south Walnut Street. The Police Department says the initiative is being held in advance of the Oct. 16 date when police will begin enforcing the new shopping cart ordinance that was adopted by Las Cruces City Council back in August. "LCPD chose to delay enforcement of the ordinance until Oct. 16 to allow for education of the new regulation and the return of carts that may be in the possession of individuals within the community," the police department said.
