BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) -- The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and the governor's office are working to improve rural parts of the state through a project that has received a multi-million-dollar grant. Louisiana Rural Infrastructure Accelerator is a project that will enhance infrastructure improvements in rural Louisiana. "It's going to be able to provide jobs that will stimulate the economy of the entire Acadian region, which will in term benefit the entire state," said Allison Bates, regional director, Governor's Office of Rural Development. Kyle Ardoin, Gov. Jeff Landry's deputy chief of staff, said the Governor's Office of Rural Development is working with local areas in need. $25 million Baton Rouge road widening project could improve traffic "Working directly with local communities to find monies to help them spur their economies and look for ways to improve the infrastructure, so that they can build a better economy for their cities," Ardoin said. "And the governor believes that the next big economic boom is going to be in the rural parts of our state" The project includes a $2 million grant funded by federal partners and Build America. It's designed to improve safety, mobility and equity. Bates said a portion of that money will go towards building railroad tracks. "$850,000 of that funding will go towards creating a rail spur for safe source direct and we will also be creating a micro transit program in the St. Martin area," Bates said. Louisiana residents will start seeing the project's benefits within a year. State leaders said they have protocols in place before working to revitalize areas on the US 90 bridge and railroad tracks.
