BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- The Kern County Coroner's Office identified the two men killed in a crash on Cottonwood Road near East Pacheco Road on Tuesday. Coroner officials identified the driver of the vehicle as Saul Glen Gonzalez, 41, of Bakersfield. The passenger was identified as Julio Alfonso Jr., 42, of Bakersfield. The crash was reported at 5:03 p.m. Alfonso Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene and Gonzalez was pronounced dead at Kern Medical. Police believe speed and impairment were both factors in the fatal crash. A witness told police the vehicle driven by Gonzalez was using the dirt shoulder of the roadway to pass other drivers. The Bakersfield Police Department is investigating the crash.
