GAITHERSBURG, Md. (DC News Now) -- Volunteers from the American Red Cross made their way from Maryland to down Florida early Thursday morning to help with recovery efforts as hurricane Milton makes its way through the southern state. It's the first time the National Capital and Greater Chesapeake Region of the Red Cross is deploying two large command and control vehicles. The first vehicle named “Red Wolf," is a 40’ long mobile command and control center. It has workstations, cameras and satellite communication to help leadership plan the Red Cross response. The other is called “Rollin Nolan.” It's a large space that can be reconfigured for a variety of uses from interviewing and helping people in their recovery process to a place where those in need and volunteers can relax and charge their items. “It's very essential. Both of these vehicles are equipped with onboard generators so we can go into areas where there is no power and still be able to plan and coordinate the red cross response," said driver Kelvin Baptist. Take a look inside Field of Screams in Maryland Baptist is one of the drivers heading to Florida, he's volunteered with the Red Cross for 21 years around the DMV region and this is the first time he's being deployed out of the area. "Just using my God given talents and skill sets to help those in need," he said. "I just wanted to help. I Just wanted to provide all skills and services to those in an effective region.” People in Florida are still recovering from hurricane Helene. Nearly 2,000 volunteers are already in the southeast region helping since hurricane Helene and hundreds more were sent to Florida in preparation for hurricane Milton. “They do it because they want to help people," said Scott Marder, Regional Communications Manager. “We want people to feel hope and to feel safe, they've gone through a terrible, terrible experience and they need a place to feel safe, a place where they can get food and shelter and medication and spiritual care and mental health care if they need it," he added. The Red Cross is working with local organizations and officials down south to help with long term recovery efforts from both hurricanes.
