The caller told dispatchers that a man “armed with a stick” had grabbed their phone and broke it before leaving the scene. When officers arrived at the intersection, they saw a man with a shotgun in his hand breaking into the leasing office of a nearby apartment community, police said in the release. The man barricaded himself in the building and officers heard at least one shot fired inside the office, police said. Minutes later, police said the man exited the apartment building with a handgun and started shooting at Castle Rock officers. Police returned fire, hitting the man. Police did not say how many officers were involved in the shooting or how many times the man was shot. No officers were injured. The Douglas County Coroner’s Office will release the man’s identity at a later date. The area around the shooting is home to multiple apartment complexes, a movie theater, an indoor climbing center and several parks. The Castle Rock officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave while the incident is reviewed, per department policy. The investigation is ongoing and anyone who witnessed the shooting or who has additional information is asked to contact the investigators at 720-733-3517 or [email protected].
