CENTRAL NEW YORK – Each of the Skaneateles and West Genesee girls swim teams would emerge with victories from Wednesday’s penultimate meets of the regular season. Hosting Baldwinsville, the Lakers prevailed 96-81 led again by Ari Matthews, who won a pair of races on her own and helped in a relay race, too. Matthews swam the 100-yard freestyle in 56.61 seconds to beat out Marcellus swimmer Vivian Pilon in 57.41 as she also won the 100 breaststroke in 1:16.75 to beat the 1:19.05 of the Mustangs’ Molly McMaster. In between those races was the 200 freestyle relay, where Matthews, paired up with Landyn Bennett, Olivia Springer and Caylinn Grady, went a quick 1:48.27, nearly eight second ahead of B’ville’s 1:56.13. Getting their own titles, Bennett went 2:07.94 to win the 200 freestyle over teammate Ana Nichols (2:20.66) in second place, while Springer swam the 50 freestyle in 26.94 seconds, beating the Bees’ Alison Kyle in 27.63. Phoebe Bedard scored 242.45 points in diving and Mattie Bales was second with 192.00 points. Pilon would get her win in the 200 individual medley going 2:26.49 to pull away from B’ville’ Addie Atherton (2:33.34), while McMaster beat Bennett, 1:05.03 to 1:07.24, in the 100 butterfly. Nichols took second in the 500 freestyle and Springer second in the 100 backstroke in 1:16.25, with Bennett, Nichols, Grady and Emma Murphy swimming the 400 freestyle relay in 4:16.75. West Genesee swam that same night against Oswego and cruised to a 99-75 victory over the Buccaneers to improve to 3-3 on the season. Maddie Owczarzak led the Wildcats, getting first in the 50 freestyle in 27.44 seconds to Joscelyn Cosinski’s 27.91 a nd adding a 100 butterfly title in 1:05.18. Kiley Johnson also won a pair of events, swimming the 200 IM in 2:39.91 and also taking the 100 freestyle in 1:02.73. Rachel Hann took first in the 200 freestyle in 2:19.39 as Lena Kent claimed the 500 freestyle (6:29.63) and Makayla Dunham edged Annalin Hyatt, 1:24.35 to 1:26.01, in the 100 breaststroke. The regular season for WG concludes conclude next Wednesday at Liverpool as Skaneateles would meet Cicero-North Syracuse that same night.
