LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — ‘Doom Scrolling’ has become a popular term for the activity of scrolling on your phone through social media sites for hours at a time, especially TikTok. “Now there’s certain aspects of TikTok that make it a little bit more likely that you’re going to have trouble disengaging from it. So, for example, you have your endless scroll, so you’re never done, there’s just no endpoint,” Psychology Professor Dr. Dan Florell said. He adds this can lead to depression, anxiety and other mental illnesses which is the reason several states across the country have filed lawsuits against the app, including Kentucky. “We’re going to force them to answer for creating and pushing an app designed specifically to addict and harm Kentucky’s children,” Attorney General Russell Coleman said. Dr. Florell explains that whether it’s a chemical imbalance, trauma, or even just a change in a person’s life, mental disorders are real, and they can be debilitating. “The mind and the brain don’t go separate. What’s happening in the mind affects the body, and what’s happening in the body affects the mind. So, to try and divorce the two is just really kind of an artificial thing. If you believe in physical health problems, you need to believe in mental health problems,” he said.
