BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — Here's a quick summary of the status of wildfires in western North Dakota, power outages and other related news: Elkhorn Fire. As of 9:00 p.m., October 9, a new fire map, produced by Dakota Prairie Grasslands - U.S. Forest Service using satellite imagery and other measurements, indicates the Elkhorn Fire is 60 percent contained. The map also shows the current area of the fire to be 10,313 acres, much less than the initial estimate of 22,430 acres. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Bear Den Fire. The Bear Den fire near Mandaree is now 45% contained and has burned almost 12,000 acres, according to the state forest service. Earlier this week, two CL-215 scooper planes from Bozeman, Montana flew in to assist in the Bear Den fire. Ray-Tioga-Alamo Fire. What started as separate fires over the weekend merged into one, covering 88,934 acres. That fire is 99% contained, but potential flareups remain an issue at this time. Power outages. The Mountrail-Williams Power Cooperative has been working at a near-constant pace since the weekend fires, restoring power to homes, businesses and other locations throughout Williams County. According to the cooperative's outage map as of 8:19 a.m., October 10, about 115 locations remain without power. The cooperative hopes to have power restored to everyone by the end of the week. Injuries and deaths. In a report to the Williams County Commission October 8, it was noted two people have died and six others injured as a result of the wildfires. Nicolaas van Eeden of South Africa and Edgar Coppersmith, Tioga, died in separate incidents. Evacuations. More than 100 people evacuated from their homes in the Arnegard and Keene areas Saturday due to the fires. Other notes. State and local officials expect the fire danger conditions to continue through the fall.
