BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — Kelly Dietz is a home owner who the knows the importance of saving money, and to always expect the unexpected. But an increase of nearly 26-percent for home insurance over the past five years was not part of her plan."It's just surprising since we have it as a safety net  and have never really had to use it, thankfully,” Kelly Dietz, homeowner, expressed. “And then just to see prices go up, it's just kind of shocking at times."Food, fuel, building supplies, labor, you name it, inflation rates in the U.S. have impacted all of us.State insurance officials those inflationary pressures are the primary reason for the hike in home insurance rates. From hurricanes in the south to wildfires across the U.S. and right here in North Dakota, officials from the State Insurance Department say inflation and insurance claims due to natural disasters... are some of the factors behind insurance hikes. The department has received numerous calls from homeowners asking why their insurance rates have increased when they've never filed a claim. Why?It comes down to the bigger picture.North Dakota is part of the broader system. It all boils down to what's known as the Reinsurance market, which has been hit hard. That's the system that protects insurers from very high claims. This has forced many smaller insurance companies to consolidate, and many have changed how they write their local insurance policies.State officials say availability is not a concern, but cost continues to be an issue. When something gets too expensive, most people shop around. That's exactly what Dietz and her husband did when their home insurance rates increased another 40-dollars a month."It just kind of felt helpless, like this is just kind of what we have to do," Dietz said. But the process of shopping for insurance wasn’t  what they were hoping for."Prices were pretty similar, kind of throughout,” Dietz shared. “You know, it was either you pay a bigger premium here or higher monthly payment here, so it really was kind of like similar."State insurance officials say it's important to shop for coverage, not necessarily price, through a trusted agent.Ultimately, that is what the Dietz's decided to do.“We considered changing it to the higher deductible with a lower payment, but we were just nervous,” Dietz said. “I think about just changing anything since the plan we've been on, has good coverage. It's never let us down before, so changing it for like a what if situation just kind of made us nervous. So we did just stick with what we knew, what we had."As the state continues to help North Dakotans better prepare their properties from losses as a result of natural disasters, there is light at the end of the tunnel.State insurance officials they're seeing a peak in home insurance market prices.Bottom line, you could see prices stabilizing the next time you renew your policy. For the Dietz family, that means looking forward to possibly splurging a more down the road, on the what she and her family enjoy in life.Reporting for KX News in Bismarck, I'm Alysia Huck.
