AUSTIN (KXAN) — A stabbing was reported Thursday at Covington Middle School, according to Austin-Travis County EMS and school officials.
ATCEMS said medics took an adolescent patient to the hospital with potentially serious injuries not expected to be life-threatening.
According to the school, officers apprehended the student involved and confirmed it was a student who was stabbed in the altercation.
According to first responders, the call came in at approximately 9:07 a.m. for 3700 Convict Hill Road, which is the address for the school.
According to CMS Principal Cedric Maddox, the school was evacuated around the same time as the incident because of a fire alarm activation in the art wing of the school, which district police believe was due to a smoke bomb.
“We are also aware of a student altercation that occurred within moments of the smoke alarm activation. At this time, it is unclear if the incidents are connected,” Maddox said in the original statement sent to the school community.

CMS said officers swept the campus and determined it was safe for students to return to class; however, the art wing would remain closed off while the investigation continues.
