LAWRENCE — Naa’san Carr, a Rider University student, received a Freedom Fund Award from the NAACP’s Trenton Branch on October 4. The award recognizes individuals who have contributed to education, voting rights, criminal justice reform, and human rights. “It’s an honor to be recognized by the Trenton Branch NAACP,” Carr said. “I don’t do this work because of the titles, but to continue fighting for the freedoms held dear.” A senior political science major from Williamstown, Carr has taken on multiple leadership roles at Rider University. He helped establish and became the inaugural president of Rider’s student chapter of the NAACP last spring. Carr was also elected as the first Black president of Rider’s Student Government Association. Carr has held leadership positions in several university organizations, including the Black Student Union, Haitian Student Association, Rider African Student Association, Black Men Unified, and Center for Diversity and Inclusion. Beyond campus, Carr serves as the second vice president for the NAACP New Jersey State Conference Youth and College Division and as the national deputy director of partnerships for College Democrats of America’s Black Caucus. The NAACP Trenton Branch awarded five other local leaders: Councilman Kevin Baxter from Ewing; Rev. Dr. John Harris of Galilee Baptist Church; Jametta Clarke, a Lawrence High School social studies teacher; Shereyl Snider from the East Trenton Collaborative; and Pastor Jose Rodriguez of The Rodriguez Family Foundation, who is also a Rider University alumnus.
