Since the early 2000s, two newspapers have shut down every week in the United States. Nearly two out of three newsroom employees have lost their jobs. Central New York is no exception, with the Syracuse New Times closing its doors in 2019 and the Post-Standard having to lay off more than 100 staff members in 2012 as it prepared to be absorbed by the nationally-owned Syracuse.com.Join Central Current for an interactive conversation about the state of local news on Monday, Nov. 18 from 5 – 6:30 pm at the Dunbar Center (453 S. State Street, Syracuse). Admission is free, and drinks and appetizers will be served. Do you think local news is accessible? How do you access it? What role should local news play in your community, and is it living up to that standard? We ask these questions for a simple reason: as a newly formed, independent, and nonprofit newspaper – we want to make sure that our reporting is meeting your needs. This session will help us improve our own work, while also providing a space to educate participants about the decline of local news resources and the work being done to rebuild them here in CNY.What are Current Conversations? When we started Central Current in 2022, we made it part of our mission to engage with our local community. We’ve always focused our reporting on what matters most to Central New Yorkers. As we continue to grow our staff and our coverage, we’re also working to create new ways for our readers to connect with our team. We want to better understand which topics interest you and what information you need to know, so we can publish more meaningful stories. To that end, Current Conversations brings you face-to-face with the people and issues shaping our city and region. These ongoing events are an opportunity to:Hear from local guest speakers Connect with other readers Engage with our journalists Learn about our reporting processCurrent Conversations are supported through a grant from the UpMobility Foundation. The post Central Current to host public forum on local news appeared first on Central Current.
