The annual Bank of America Chicago Marathon will have racers take over city streets on Sunday.A record 50,000 runners are expected to participate in the 46th running of the marathon, which begins and ends in Grant Park on Oct. 13.To prepare for Sunday, here’s a guide for all you need to know, whether you’re watching the race in person or from the comfort of your home:When is the race?Participants in the marathon will begin the race in a series of waves from the starting point in Grant Park.Men’s wheelchair: 7:20 a.m.Women’s wheelchair: 7:21 a.m.Handcycle: 7:23 a.m.Wave 1 (corrals A, B, C, D and E): 7:30 a.m.Wave 2 (corrals F, G, H and J): 8:00 a.m.Wave 3 (corrals K, L, M and N): 8:35 a.m.Grant Park opens to spectators and the post-race party begins at 9:30 a.m.Where is the race course?The course begins on the north end of Grant Park on Columbus Drive and ends on the south end.Participants will race all the way north to Sheridan Road, west to Damen Avenue, and south to 35th Street before returning to Grant Park. When does the race end?Organizers expect the first wheelchair marathon participants to cross the finish line about 8:45 a.m., and the first runners to cross about 9:35 a.m.All runners are required to finish by 4 p.m., which marks the official course limit of 6 1/2 hours, or a roughly 15 minute per mile pace. Can I watch from the start and finish lines?No. Access to the start and finish lines is restricted to marathon participants, staff and select ticketed guests.Organizers recommend spectators watch the race from other points along the course.Where can I cheer runners along the route?Spectators can cheer on marathon participants all across the city.Run clubs, nonprofits, businesses and other organizations host “cheer zones” all along the route where spectators can support participants. A map of these community “cheer zones” is available on the ChiMarathon app.How can I track a runner?Using the ChiMarathon app, spectators can track individual runners along the course in real time.How can I find a participant after the race?The Runner Reunite area will open at 9:30 a.m. in Grant Park, the same time the post-race party begins.To enter, attendees will need to go through entrances at Jackson Drive and Michigan Avenue or Ida B. Wells Drive and Michigan Avenue.How will traffic be affected?Jackson Drive, between Columbus and DuSable Lake Shore drives, will close at 10 a.m. Wednesday. The street is expected to reopen Monday morning.Twelve more street closures are planned around Grant Park — the starting and finishing points of the marathon — before the race gets underway on Sunday.Sections of Columbus Drive will close beginning Thursday at Roosevelt Road, north to Ida B. Wells Drive. The closure will extend to Monroe Street on Friday morning and to Randolph Street on Saturday morning.For the Chicago 5K, there are 12 planned street closures on Saturday between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m.On marathon day, there are 41 more planned road closures. A marathon organizer said additional roads may close if officials or police deem it necessary on Sunday.When do I have to move my parked car from the course?All cars along the course and in other designated no-parking zones for the marathon will be towed and ticketed beginning at 1 a.m. on Sunday. If your vehicle is towed, organizers say to call 312-744-4444.
