ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — October is Breast Cancer Awareness month - and local doctors are urging woman to get their mammograms. According to the National Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation, more than 360,000 people will be diagnosed in 2024. Early detection has been and continues to be at the forefront when it comes to breast cancer awareness. Doctor Jennifer Harvey with URMC is among the doctors encouraging woman to get their mammograms. Harvey is the chair of imaging sciences. She says new technological advancements have made them much more reliable. "One of the technologies that we've recently obtained is actually contract enhanced mammograms," she said. "For the patient if feels very much like a regular mammogram, except that we place an IV and inject contrast, the same as CT scans, and cancers light up.
