FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Each week, a group of Latinas take time to meet up at different locations throughout Fresno to offer support to one another, share resources, and discuss painful shared experiences. Mujeres Poderosas Amorosas, or Powerful Loving Women, is a group where women like Carmela Flores have found ways to heal and overcome while sharing some of their most intimate moments in a safe space. "I'm sorry. It really gets me," Flores said. "I really don't want other women to go through the same thing. I remember my dad saying, you need to go back to that person who was hurting me, almost killed you, and I said, no, I understand our culture, but that doesn't mean that I need to die." Mujeres Poderosas Amorosas is a project of Cultiva la Salud. The project is made up of a network of Latina immigrants to promote the prevention of domestic violence through financial and emotional support.  Flores first joined in 2020 and says groups like these play a vital role in helping women feel safe and empowered. According to the CDC, one in three Latinas will experience intimate partner violence in her lifetime.   Mujeres Poderosas Amorosas works to prevent that number from rising by providing resources to mental health services, English classes, and child care. They do so while also helping the women become financially independent through grants and classes. Aura Gonzalez, Communication Manager for Cultiva La Salud says the additional resources are just as integral to healing as everything outreach. “To break the cycle of violence, you need to become financially independent," Gonzalez said. "But to have a secure place where you can live, right? And sometimes it's not so easy to find affordable housing here in Fresno County. So we help them to navigate that.” The meetings are a safe space, where the women get to share stories of perseverance and strength, breaking generational cycles of abuse for themselves and their children. For these women who have now been attending for a few years, meeting new members gives them purpose. "Please come, and know more about how to spot it. Also somewhat also, because here is a safe space where you can feel secure, and you can share your story without any kind of judgment. And please give yourself that opportunity. I know you're going to feel nervous at the beginning, but I promise that you're going to feel welcome and you're going to heal," said Maria Flores, a participant of Mujeres Poderosas Amorosas. Anyone seeking that support for themselves can join Mujeres Poderosas Amorosas by reaching out via Facebook or by calling 559-498-0870.
