Boring Bo is not bad for the Broncos. Denver has posted seven straight losing seasons and missed the playoffs eight consecutive years. There is nothing boring about winning after reaching the nadir of suffering since Super Bowl 50. The Broncos have reeled off three straight victories and can win two straight division games to start a season for the first time since 2017. Are you not entertained? During this streak, Bo Nix has become khaki pants and a white t-shirt. If he were a vegetable, he would be kale. And there is nothing wrong with that. As I wrote during training camp, the Broncos’ formula for success would center on protecting the rock, producing turnovers, and finding an edge in the special teams margins. Over the past three weeks, Nix has not given the ball away and taken only three sacks. The Broncos are plus-4 in turnover margin, while yielding 11.3 points per game. Sound familiar? Last season when they won five straight, the Broncos delivered 16 takeaways with only three giveaways, while holding opponents to 16 points per game. Bo-redom can be a good thing at this point in his career. His resume boasts five games. It remains jarring, for sure. At Oregon, Nix produced statistics that were more stylish than the Ducks’ uniforms. In his first two weeks in the NFL, he learned a sobering truth foreign to only C.J. Stroud and Jayden Daniels. The transition to the league is more of a four-wheel excursion than an E-470 straightaway. The Broncos dropped their initial two games as Nix dropped back relentlessly, throwing four interceptions. He has not turned the ball over since. Yes, the Broncos passing game has been a tough watch. Nix threw for minus-7 yards in the first half at the Jets. Three and outs remain a problem as Denver ranks 31st in third down conversions (24 percent). But it is not making our brains go numb. Why? It fits with who he is and who his teammates are a third of the way into the season. The Broncos can beat anyone – that includes the Chargers on Sunday – if they don’t provide gifts. And context matters. He is a rookie. When Russell Wilson went into a shell when the team went on a heater, it was concerning because he was being paid to make everyone around him better. He was not afforded the luxury of becoming an accessory. His experience and his salary forged different expectations. For Nix, he can put us to sleep for long stretches, and it is beneficial for his development. He is learning how to win. The 2015 Broncos pulled this off. It gets lost in the memory, but that season Peyton Manning and Brock Osweiler combined for 19 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. The run game became a good friend as the defense dropped its fangs. Nix is on pace for 10 touchdowns and 14 picks. But the ground attack is starting to percolate, suggesting play-action and bootleg strikes exist in Nix’s future. Can the Broncos win another title this way? Of course not. Can they stay relevant while Nix gains a better understanding of the position? Yes. Can they reach the playoffs in this fashion? Absolutely. “He has shown a willingness to do what it takes to win. He has great composure. Nothing fazes the kid,” said left tackle Garett Bolles, noting the Broncos have lost two right tackles and their center during the streak. “I have been around so many different quarterbacks. You see who has it and who doesn’t. He has it. He is special.” So who cares if his statistics are not? They don’t have to be. There will come a time, probably around midseason, that the requirements on Nix will escalate. Opponents will stack the box. They will jam receivers. He must become more consistent with his footwork and take advantage of the middle of the field. His growth is currently measured in decisions, not numbers. He continues to get the team into the right play, and has shown an ability to avoid sacks. Wilson was dropped 45 times last season, and only scored on five drives when he was sacked – all field goals. Nix has been sacked seven times (he’s on pace for 24), and has produced two field goals on those drives. He is processing information well and staying in the pocket with well-designed protection plans. Sacks represent lost yardage and a lost down. The Broncos are not built to overcome those like Sean Payton’s Saints. Let’s be clear, Nix is showing glimpses of his potential. He is one of only seven rookies since 1970 with three passing touchdowns and three rushing touchdowns in his team’s first five games. And he 119 yards rushing. Nix is not Manning. It is not his responsibility to entertain us every moment of every Sunday. Not yet anyway. Bo-ring is a good way to receive an education while winning. “He sees things so well. It has been impressive,” Bolles said. “He is only going to get more comfortable and get better and better. And we will go as far as he goes.”
