EL CAJON, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A tanker truck carrying about 8,800 gallons of gasoline overturned Wednesday, prompting evacuations in an area of El Cajon, authorities said. The crash occurred around 9:39 a.m. at the intersection of Fletcher Parkway and Navajo Road, Andy McKellar with Heartland Fire & Rescue said in a news release. San Diego County Hazmat crews were called to the scene after fuel flowed into storm drains next to the collision. "Homes within 300 feet of the incident were evacuated and people living beyond that pointwere advised to shelter in place," McKellar said. Two large sinkholes threatening property in University City The Fletcher Hills Recreation Center, located at 2345 Center Place in El Cajon, was designated as a temporary evacuation point. The fuel also leaked into the underground electrical system, which forced San Diego Gas and Electric to shut down power in the area to fix the issue. The driver of the truck was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.
