SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- It's October, which means it's time for carving pumpkins, going on a slow walk on a foggy morning, or staying in to watch a spooky movie. It's also that unique time of the year where one's palate may transition from the light, crisp flavors offered by lagers to perhaps a smokier brew. To help you find your favorite for the season, FOX 5/KUSI has rounded up a few of the following local taprooms and breweries offering fall flavors as San Diego embraces the shorter days of autumn. Helix Brewing Co. Helix Brewing Co. is based in La Mesa. (KSWB) If you're a fan of pumpkin spice, switch out your latte for the Baesic Batch currently being offered at Helix Brewing Co. in La Mesa. The seasonal pumpkin ale is reported to have notes of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and allspice as well as brown sugar and caramel, according to user reviews on the beer-centric app, Untappd. Karl Strauss Brewing Company Now that Oktoberfest has arrived in San Diego, why not enjoy a beer named after the annual Bavarian celebration? Karl Strauss is currently pouring a lager with toasted malt flavors and nutty undertones meant to be "characteristic of this renowned Bavarian beer style," the brewery describes on its website. Plus, for those with a sweet tooth, Karl Strauss will be releasing a porter this month with notes of dark chocolate and peanut butter. Kilowatt Brewing The Maple Smoked Maibock at Kilowatt Brewing is a malty German lager perfect for the changing of the seasons. Brewed with wood-smoked malt and Vermont maple syrup, this creation has won awards in the Great American Beer Festival and the U.S. Open Beer Championship. Give it a taste and see for yourself what makes it so unique. Mike Hess Brewing Above: Mike Hess appeared on FOX 5 News on Aug. 6 to celebrate 14 years of business. Mike Hess Brewing currently has four seasonal beers on tap, but if you're looking for something more malty with low hops, the Oktoberhess marzen is probably the one for you. According to its website, this lager takes twice as long to produce as an ale. Stone Brewing Ghoulish Delights by Stone Brewing is being offered for the autumn season. Last but not least is Stone Brewing's Ghoulish Delights, a dark imperial lager with bourbon oak and Vermont maple syrup for a hint of sweetness. It is described as having a "malty, roasty and toasty" flavor profile, fitting for spooky season. You can visit Stone Brewing's bistro and gardens at Liberty Station in San Diego as well as their location in Escondido.
