LYON COUNY (KSNT) - Local law enforcement is urging parents to be wary of dangerous situations when trick-or-treating as Halloween approaches. On Monday, Oct. 7, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office posted on Facebook telling parents to check for sex offenders before letting children go trick-or-treating. The registry can be found on your local police department's website. There are over 150 offenders registered in Lyon County. 27 News spoke with Detective Eric Williams with the Lyon County Sheriff's Office who explained why the registry is a vital resource. He said it is important to keep in mind that no law in Kansas prevents offenders from passing out candy. Shawnee County Halloween events to take your kids to this year "It's always best for people to be aware and everything like that when it comes to their children and going to strangers' houses for trick-or-treating," Williams said. "Just another tool in parent's pockets to basically make sure everybody's safe and has fun." Williams also said law enforcement will be in the community to ensure safety.
