SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A local girls varsity girls soccer team hosted a fundraiser Wednesday night to support Breast Cancer Research. A sea of pink filled the stands at AIC, during Springfield Charter School's varsity girls soccer game. Dozens showed up to support the team's mission to raise funds for those battling or who have survived breast cancer. "It's great to see people come together for one cause and I love it, it's great," said soccer player, Hailey Morin. "It's great to see just all of us come together, everyone's support, everyone wearing pink," added soccer player, Lycias Suggs. Players on the varsity girls' soccer team say they are excited to make a positive impact in their community and help raise funds for the Baystate Health Foundation. The funds will go towards breast cancer research, and to prevent, detect, and treat the disease. This disease is the most common cancer among women with 1 in 8 developing it in their lifetime. "It can be your mom, your sister, your aunt, so it is very important that we put as much knowledge and research behind this so that we can hopefully bring those numbers down or make it at least the ways we take care of this are safer and end up with the best results at the end," expressed Springfield Charter School Varsity Girls Assistant Coach, Stefania Falvo. "My mother had a double mastectomy and lived 15 years after that I think it's important that woman and all cancer survivors know that they're people here helping them and raising money and trying to do the best they can," added Springfield Charter School Varsity Girls Head Coach, Matt Smith. His personal connection inspired the team to start this event, they hope that their actions will bring awareness to this disease, and inspire others to join in the fight against cancer. The team hopes to have raised nearly $1,000 for cancer research and breast cancer victims.
