SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - It's going to be busy in downtown Springfield this weekend. People from all over Western Massachusetts, the state, the country, and possibly the world will all be traveling to Springfield this weekend. The weekend kicks off with the Springfield Thunderbirds' sold-out Opening Night on Saturday and then the Basketball Hall of Fame Enshrinement right down the street at Symphony Hall on Sunday night. Smaller preparations for this busy weekend have already started. "The main activities will happen at midnight Saturday into Sunday where Court Square will be closed, City Hall Place, Pynchon Street, and development will happen of the ancillary work that will be down by the Hall of Fame and NBA security along East Columbus Avenue," Chris Cignoli, Director of the Springfield Department of Public Works, said. There will be a red carpet outside of Symphony Hall where current Hall of Famers and the new inductees will be walking by, and there is even a designated place for the public to come and watch. East Columbus Avenue will be closed until around 6:30 p.m. Sunday night from the Marriott Hotel to Symphony Hall for the red carpet. If you are on East Columbus, either driving on East Columbus or coming out of the MGM garage, you will be able to get onto 91 North; that will be accessible. Since the Thunderbirds game will be getting out around the same time as many roads will be closed. 'We are asking for the public just to show some patience and we will get you out as safely as possible," says Springfield Police Captain David Martin. MGM's parking garage will be open and free to park, but there are many other parking garages in the downtown area that have $10 event parking. As many of the streets will reopen Sunday late afternoon into the early night, Court Square could remain closed until very early Monday morning.
