WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Residents on one street in West Springfield are requesting speed humps as cars fly down their street. The West Springfield Department of Public Works conducted a speed data analysis on the street and found unsettling numbers. The speed limit is 30 mph and even though the street is a hill on one side, the town accounted for how this may increase a driver's speed and placed the tracker about 150 feet from the end of the hill to see if drivers slowed down at all. Connor Knightly, the town engineer for the West Springfield Town Council Department of Public Works said the study was one week long and in that time, 8,693 vehicles were analyzed. After tracking their speeds, 1,992 of the vehicles drove at speeds that would receive a violation from the Police, that's 23% of drivers in just a one week period. 15% of drivers were traveling 39 mph or faster and the fastest speed tracked was 66 miles per hour, over double the speed limit. One resident 22News spoke to said they had to move her mailbox as going across the street was too dangerous. Residents are hoping to see speed humps installed soon, but Knightly said the scheduling is impacted by the weather and availability of the operations staff. In best case scenario, the speed humps are installed this fall, but he said he wouldn't be surprised if their installation is scheduled for the spring of 2025.
