Chicopee business owner hosts donation drive for Helene victims

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - One local business owner is taking on Hurricane Helene relief efforts for victims in North Carolina.
As Hurricane Milton wreaks havoc in Florida, other states recover from Hurricane Helene. North Carolina experienced some of the worst damage, with roads in the western half of the state unrecognizable. Fred Lowenthal with Sparky's services is hosting a local donation drive this weekend. I asked him what the inspiration was for taking matters into his own hands.
"These are people that really need it you know. I've been seeing video footage and pictures and things like that of just everybody. They had everything that was going for them and now they're down to nothing," said Lowenthal.
North Carolina saw some of the most significant impacts from Hurricane Helene with the death toll rising above 100 and there are still thousands without power.
The drive will take place at Belchertown Commons on Friday and Saturday between 10 am and 2 pm. He also plans on personally delivering these much-needed supplies to Asheville, North Carolina, and the surrounding communities. The 14-hour plus drive is set to be costly, but to Lowenthal, it's worth the price.
"There are other reputable places where you can donate to. We are a local company and we are willing to go down there… to be able to know that it puts a smile on somebody else's face to me is priceless," Lowenthal said.
The main items to donate are hygiene products, clothes, and camping supplies. You can also donate monetarily by Venmo or check. Please write "Asheville, NC" in the memo.
