PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Providence is poised to become the first East Coast city to ban the construction of new gas stations. The Committee on Ordinances voted Wednesday night to approve an amendment to Providence's draft comprehensive plan that would prohibit new gas stations from setting up shop in the capital city. Senior Deputy Majority Leader John Goncalves, who introduced the amendment, stressed that Providence has an abundance of gas stations, and this will ensure that available lots are put to more sustainable use. "We face an unprecedented climate crisis," Goncalves said. "This is an issue where we can – and must – take bold action. Providence can lead the way in reducing carbon emissions and promoting cleaner, greener energy alternatives." "While advancing sustainable energy alternatives, existing stations will continue to serve the community, remaining a valuable resource, as we also move toward gradually shifting to the energy of the future," he continued. Goncalves said that, although other cities across the country have enacted similar prohibitions, Providence would be the first along the East Coast to do so. The amendment will eventually be enacted through a zoning ordinance, so long as the 10-year plan receives the approval of the full Providence City Council.
