NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) — The Newport Police Department is touting the success of its mobile noise enforcement trailer, which went live over the summer. The trailer, currently parked off of Thames Street, is equipped with advanced sound-monitoring technology designed to track and record excessive noise levels. So far, officers have reviewed 39 potential violations that resulted in 18 warnings and citations, which is a significant increase from previous years. The police department recorded only 21 violations last year, most of which only resulted in warnings. No violations were recorded the year prior to that. The trailer is playing a key role in addressing excessive noise on Thames Street, which is where most complaints originate from, according to the police department. How to report a noise complaint in Newport "The introduction of the mobile noise trailer has been a game changer for us," Newport Police Captain Michael Naylor said. "It allows us to monitor noise levels effectively and ensure a higher standard of peace and quiet for our residents and visitors alike." Newport is planning on activating a second mobile noise enforcement trailer soon so one can operate on battery power while the other is charging. The additional trailer will allow the police department to rotate them among several known hot spots across the city, including along Bellevue Avenue, Ocean Drive, Broadway and Admiral Kalbfus Boulevard. "By utilizing these mobile noise trailers and developing efficient enforcement tools, we aretaking an important step in reducing noise pollution and ensuring the quality of life for ourresidents," Newport Police Chief Ryan Duffy said. The police department is working on streamlining the enforcement process by creating an online portal, which would allow officers to quickly review potential violations. The city is also exploring the possibility of making excessive noise fines payable by mail, which would eliminate the need for violators to appear in court. Close Thanks for signing up!
