NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key in Sarasota County on Florida’s west coast, according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm hit with maximum sustained winds estimated at 120 mph. Life-threatening storm surge, extreme winds, and flash flooding continue to affect Florida's west coast as Milton moves inland. Recent reports include sustained winds of 64 mph and a gust of 93 mph at Albert Whitted Airport in St. Petersburg. A WeatherFlow station at Egmont Channel recorded sustained winds of 78 mph and a gust of 100 mph, while another WeatherFlow station at Skyway Fishing Pier registered sustained winds of 73 mph and a gust of 102 mph. In Orlando, the Executive Airport reported a gust of 60 mph. Hurricane Milton, as seen on National Weather Service radar from Tampa, appears to be a sheared storm, with its heaviest precipitation to the north of the center and an open eye on the southern side. A life-threatening storm surge is expected from Wednesday into Thursday along parts of Florida's west coast. Surge levels could peak at 9 to 13 feet from Anna Maria Island to Boca Grande, 6 to 9 feet from the Anclote River to Anna Maria Island, including Tampa Bay, and 8 to 12 feet from Boca Grande to Bonita Beach, including Charlotte Harbor. Further north, surge levels of 2 to 4 feet are expected from the Anclote River to Yankeetown. Heavy rain will also pose a major flood threat from Wednesday through Thursday, with rainfall amounts ranging from 5 to 12 inches, and localized areas potentially seeing up to 18 inches. There is also a risk of tornadoes across the region through Thursday morning.
