Lexington’s affordable housing stock is increasing by a count of three. A faith-based organization spearheaded construction on the housing space found in one structure. The affordable housing triplex is found in Lexington’s East End neighborhood. The two-story structure on Magoffin Street features two one-bedroom units as well as one three-bedroom unit. Gleanings Housing Incorporated Director Laura Slaughter said it’s a bit higher density, but still nice. “I mean, they still have a yard. They still have everything. So, triplexes you don’t see as many of them. One of them is because it’s commercial build. But, I think that’s the way we’re going to be able to create more affordable housing,” said Slaughter. Slaughter said the goal is to provide housing for the very low-income. Rent will be set at 30% of household income. During his remarks, retired pastor Don Van Zant spoke of how in Biblical times a stone was set to recognize God’s doing. “And that’s what I see in this house. This is the first one. But, when we go by it we’ll always go that was the first one. I helped on that. God did this,” said Van Zant. All volunteer labor was used to construct the $175,000 triplex. Lexington Housing Advocacy and Community Development Commissioner Charlie Lanter said everyone knows there’s an affordable housing crisis and faith-based projects are part of the answer. “We’re not in a position to refuse help from anyone, right? We’re grateful for organizations like Gleanings and other faith-based organizations for doing what they do because it’s way more than the city or anyone could do alone,” said Lanter. Slaughter said the hope is to see the first residents move in in early November. ** WEKU is working hard to be a leading source for public service, and fact-based journalism.
