WASHINGTON COUNTY, Wis. (WFRV) — With upcoming national and local elections, a sheriff's office in Wisconsin is addressing recent incidents involving the theft or vandalism of political signs in the community. Although it's not an overwhelming issue in the county, the Washington County Sheriff's Office is reminding the public of the importance of respecting the democratic process and individuals' rights to express their political opinions. “We take these incidents seriously,” said Washington County Sheriff Martin Schulteis. “Stealing a political sign is an attack on the democratic process. We encourage citizens to respect the rights of others, even if they disagree with another’s political viewpoint.” While seemingly a minor offense, the theft or vandalism of political signs undermines the fundamental principles of free speech and civic engagement. These signs are not just pieces of material; they represent the voices and values of individuals in the community. Citizens can help protect their political signs by: Placing signs in well-lit, visible areas. Using secure mounting methods. Reporting suspicious activity to local law enforcement. “As the election approaches, we urge all community members to engage in respectful political discourse,” added Schulteis. “The sheriff’s office is committed to investigating these incidents and holding offenders accountable.”
