MADISON, Wis. (WFRV) – A total of 131 people were cited for underage drinking, and dozens of fake identification cards were confiscated in one of Wisconsin’s most popular cities. According to a release, on Oct. 4, 2024, shortly before 11:45 p.m., the Central Community Policing Team and several other Central District officers with the Madison Police Department conducted a tavern safety inspection at a bar on Regent Street. 61-year-old cyclist killed in hit-and-run by unlicensed driver in central Wisconsin Police say 131 patrons, around 82% of the bar’s lawful capacity, were cited for underage drinking. Dozens of fake identification cards were also confiscated. Bar checks and other liquor law enforcement are regular parts of the Central Community Policing Team’s work. “We are reminding everyone that unless you are 21 years of age, you cannot be in a bar drinking alcohol,” public information officer Stephanie Fryer said. Below are the most common citations issued every weekend and, more specifically, during bar checks: Underage Person Not to Possess or Consume Alcohol Beverages on Licensed Premises Fine: $376-$1,006 Underage Person Enters or Attempts to Enter Licensed Premises Fine: $376-$1,006 Underage Person Intentionally Carrying ID Not Theirs or Carrying Altered or Duplicated to Convey False Information Fine: $376-$1,006 Resisting Arrest or Obstructing Fine: $439 The Madison Police Department advises that if police contact you during one of these bar checks, the best action is to be honest, provide your legal identification card, and turn over any fake identification card. Sheboygan PD identifies suspect vehicle in hit-and-run that significantly injured bicyclist “Cooperation and honesty will typically result in the issuance of a single citation,” Fryer said. “Attempting to flee police or lying about your name and date of birth will only lead to more citations or charges.” This follows a similar incident on Sept. 5, 2024, when a bar in downtown Madison was operating at more than 50% of its lawful capacity and had over 150 underage patrons consuming alcohol.
