FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – The U.S. House of Representatives voted last month to bar new drones from a Chinese manufacturer called DJI. Officials say DJI drones are the industry standard right now however law makers have repeatedly raised concerns that DJI poses national security risks, something the company rejects. The bill is part of what is being called '"China Week," an initiative implemented by the U.S. government to restrict the use of other Chinese technologies in the country. Scott Caudill, Fort Wayne chief of police, said their drone program is very successful as they use them for numerous different situations. The Fort Wayne Police Department is looking ahead of the possible ban, saying they are now starting to look at other manufactures. "The nice thing about our drone program is that we've grown it. The bad thing about it is, because we've grown it, we're to the point now where we have to start replacing the drones in about two a year," said Caudill. "...the DJI issue with the Chinese made drones is a federal level possible mandate that's coming, so that's why we're looking at transitioning to products that are non DGI, but they are the industry standard right now." Currently, Fort Wayne City Council is reviewing the city's budget for 2025, included in that is a projected $87 million for the FWPD. Caudill said he'd like to be able to replace all the drones at once with new ones that are non DJI, but they will first have to assess how much they will actually be getting next year in the budget. The bill still needs to be approved by the U.S. Senate before it could become law, it would not prevent existing DJI drones from operating in the United States but rather prohibit the use new ones. The legislation is not set to be passed until after the presidential election in November.
