EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — New Mexico State football suffered a 54-13 loss to Jacksonville State at AmFirst Stadium in Jacksonville, Alabama on Wednesday night. FINAL: Jax State 54, NM State 13Very tough night for New Mexico State. Aggies drop its fifth straight game and now sit with a 1-5 overall record and a 0-3 CUSA record.Very short turnaround for NMSU. Aggies back in action next Tuesday against LA Tech at Aggie Memorial Stadium.— Sam Guzman (@SamGuzmanTV) October 10, 2024 That's the fifth straight game NMSU has dropped. The Aggies currently sit with a 1-5 overall record and 0-3 CUSA record. "Honestly, [it was] an embarrassing performance," NMSU head coach Tony Sanchez said postgame. "We came out early in the game and did some decent things, but early on we had manageable third downs, we had a second and one where we burst into the play, and we jumped offsides. Those things really put us in the hole early in the game. Defensively, we were just a really poor tackling football team, and we don't play very well on the back end. That's my fault, I am the head coach. I take full responsibility. I got to do a better job of preparing these guys because right now we are not a very good football team, and I am the guy in charge of it." After NMSU kicker Abraham Montaño nailed a 53-yard field goal in to put the Aggies up 3-0 with 8:16 to go in the first quarter, Jacksonville State popped off. Jax State proceeded to outscore NMSU 33-3 after Montaño's first made field goal of the game. Marucci came back in for NMSU's two drives but was taken out of the game after he was sacked and fumbled the ball, that Jax State's defense recovered, with less than a minute to go in the first half. Sanchez said postgame that Marucci waas in concussion protocol in the second half. Awad came in for Marucci and played the rest of the game. Awad completed 9-of-16 passes for 120 yards, threw a touchdown pass and an interception. New Mexico State's first touchdown of the game came in the fourth quarter when Awad connected with PJ Johnson II on a 21-yard touchdown pass with 10:37 left.
