EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Las Cruces Police Department (LCPD) is providing free temporary storage for unhoused people following the beginning enforcement of the Shopping Cart Ordinance on Oct. 16. Las Cruces adds new law to prevent theft of shopping carts The storage will be in a large shipping container, a Conex box, in the back lot of the LCPD station on Picacho Avenue where individuals can temporarily store their personal belongings instead of using a shopping cart, according to LCPD. According to LCPD, stored items cannot be heavier than 35 pounds and include the following restrictions: No perishables No liquids No medications or drugs No currency No flammable No firearms or sharp objects All items will be subjected to a search before being stored away, according to LCPD. Individuals interested in storing their items can visit the Records window from 8 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 5 p.m. at the LCPD station located at 217 E. Picacho Ave. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, excluding holidays. Las Cruces City Council approved the new Shopping Cart Ordinance on Aug. 5. "The ordinance intends to eliminate the public nuisance and potential hazards created when shopping carts are removed from retail establishments," according to LCPD.
