(COLORADO SPRINGS) -- There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding the upcoming Presidential Election and it may be impacting how people are spending their paychecks. Discretionary spending is usually the first to go, when people are tightening their purse strings, and that could have an impact on local businesses in the beauty industry. Some people are cutting back on their spending, and luxuries are the first to go for many, which is beginning to hurt businesses like local nail and hair salons, massage parlors, and many others. "There's so many things that's happening right now, the hurricanes, and you know, these things like beauty in the world is probably not on the top of their list," said Natalie Duk, an employee at Beauty Bar. Local nail and hair salons, skin care, and massage parlors are taking a hit this election season. "I think the beauty industry, it definitely can take a hit, but women are always wanting to look beautiful, always wanting to feel good, which is really, really awesome. But, I would say the economy would definitely affect it," added Duk. Some people are nervous ahead of the November election and an uncertain economy. "You know we all have family, kids to take care of, food to get, rent to pay, so I think for the most part, they figure out what it is important, that's for them," said Duk. She says that's not the case for business at the Beauty Bar, but other businesses in the industry are reporting losses. "I can see why people might want to be a little bit more frugal, you know, this time," she added. However, FOX21 News spoke to an economic specialist to see if people's concerns are reflected in business data. He said that the person in the oval office doesn't impact the economy as much as some people think they do. "I think a lot of people have a really exaggerated idea of how much the short run ups and downs of the economy have to do with the president," said Bill Craighead, Program Director for UCCS Economic Forum. He said it is normal for people to sacrifice big-ticket spending when they are uncertain about the future of the economy. "Items that people consider luxuries are going to go before necessities. You know, other things that are affected are big ticket purchases, people hold off on buying things like new cars and appliances when they feel uncertainty," he added. Both Duk and Craighead agree that supporting local businesses is the best way to keep the economy going. "Consumer spending really drives the economy. I think people need to try to make the best decisions for themselves, but if we do have everybody cutting back on their spending all at once, it does act as a drag on the economy," said Craighead. Several other beauty businesses FOX21 News spoke to, who did not want to go on record, said their sales have been going down recently. Plus, a new poll says the economy is the most important issue for voters this election, no other issue topped the 50% threshold in the survey.
