CHARLOTTE, N.C. – People all over the Carolinas and beyond are helping Hurricane Helene survivors. A local equine veterinarian has been driving up to the mountains to offer his services. Dr. Robbie Whaley has been coordinating his efforts with first responders on the ground. They sent him, and volunteer vet techs who were with him, to Burnsville first. There, they provided basic care and emergency care, including delivering a foal. The man who owned the mare cried when Dr. Whaley told him his services were no cost to him. Dr. Whaley says, “I thought, you know what? I’m a veterinarian, so I think I’ll do my specialty and go see if there’s any animals that need to be saved, triaged, you know, whatever. And just be there for the people. Because I know if people are suffering, animals are suffering.” Dr. Whaley was asked to bring sutures, bandages and antibiotics with him when he goes to the mountains. People have donated thousands of dollars to him to help cover the cost of those supplies.
