BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) – Cemeteries represent different things to different people. They can be places of reverence, of quiet reflection, of reconnection with loved ones who've passed. They can also be places where we share the experiences of this life with those who've already lived theirs: Holidays, birthdays, even weddings and graduations. Perhaps the simple joys of movies and popcorn. That is the plan at Greenlawn Funeral Home and Cemetery, on River Boulevard, in northeast Bakersfield. They're planning on showing two Halloween-themed features, drive-in-movie style – the Tim Burton animated film Frankenweenie, and the 1935 black-and-white sci-fi horror classic, The Bride of Frankenstein – a family lawn chair event in the parking lot, not on the memorial lawn. Devin Bowlds, Greenlawn Northeast's managing partner, said the event – expected to be a break-even financial proposition at best – is all about destigmatizing cemeteries and welcoming in the community. “There's not a lot of events like this in Bakersfield,” Bowlds said. “We're trying to evolve as a cemetery and keep up with some of the things other cemeteries are doing around the nation.” New Family Justice Center provides resources in Delano Thing is, not everyone thinks that's a great idea. Sydnee Hodson has a half-dozen relatives buried here at Greenlawn, and she thinks it's disrespectful to show movies there. She started a petition asking that the event be canceled, and she says she has 500 signatures. “I just don't think that a cemetery is a proper place for a community event,” Hodson said. “It's not a drive-in theater. It's a place for rest. It's a place to mourn.” Bowlds says the Houston-based company that owns Greenlawn has held movie nights like this elsewhere, and they've been well received. Dia de Las Muertos, a Mexican celebration of the dead, is well accepted – and Greenlawn, like other local cemeteries, is planning festivities. Other memorial lawns also stage events, like the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles. Is Bakersfield ready for Halloween Movie Night? The half-dozen people we talked to Wednesday at Greenlawn – visiting departed loved ones – said they liked the idea. A healthy sort of normalization of death, or infringement on something sacred? You be the judge.
