The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) and their Michigan Chapter just announced the winners of their recent Emmy® Awards, and producer Kegan Sant took home a big win for his Michael Medoway-directed commercial with the Detroit Pistons. In an exclusive statement to us here, Sant comments, “All of my awards are meaningful. They are milestones in my career and a good indicator that I am staying relevant in a highly competitive industry. My most recent Emmy win for Best Commercial by director Michael Medoway with the Detroit Pistons is especially important as the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is a highly revered group of industry professionals and globally respected.” Sant, a popular producer who found himself on his first commercial set at the age of only 15, was instantly hooked when seeing all the cameras in action. He explains, “A few years later [after his first experience on set at 15], I was browsing a camera forum dedicated to an iconic camera of my generation, the DVX100. Jarred Land, formerly of RED ran it and there was a thread by a fellow user that had a great poster mockup. Turns out they were shooting in Toronto. I reached out and was told they had just started principal photography. I offered to shoot B-cam, they accepted and I ended up producing the film with Vivica A. Fox! I was 21 and it was a massive confidence boost. I started producing music videos and segued into commercials thereafter.” With years of experience under his belt, Sant works mainly in New York and Toronto, even though this recent big win was for the NBA team located in Detroit. When asked about the major differences between the US and Canada when it comes to production and resources, he revealed, “There’s a very global approach to production these days; I think it’s more about thinking through the similarities of working in both markets and the reasons for choosing one over the other. There are great crews, equipment and vendors in both countries. Beautiful land, lakes, mountains and cities. I’ve been very fortunate to shoot in many countries and it’s given me great perspective – details are everything. Commercial filmmaking and advertising are high risk, high reward industries and as long as you respect the process, working in both countries is a privilege.” And when it comes to the technology behind his productions he takes on, Sant is all about using a combination of platforms that will give his partners the best finished product. But with that in mind, he is all about thinking backwards: “Think about your end result and work backward,” he tells us. “I bid on my commercial projects using Hot Budget and my narrative projects using Movie Magic Budgeting. Dropbox Business, WeTransfer and Simian are all very effective tools for a producer. There are many different combinations of programs and cloud based platforms that folks can use based on their methodology. Don’t know where to start? Think about your end result and work backward. For my commercial work, I like technically challenging projects. You need to film and live stream 4K/360 footage from the Arctic Circle? I’m your guy. You want to shoot a car commercial using drones, technocranes, and pursuit vehicles in downtown traffic? Up my alley. In my narrative work, I love a good period drama.. More than anything, my favorite projects are with people I like working with. Process matters as much as the end result.” Sant is now on top of the industry and in demand. This new Emmy Award win joins a list of other top honors he has received, including wins and recognition multiple years at the CLIO Awards, Webby Awards, D&AD Awards, The Cassies, Cannes Lion & more. After twenty rigorous years working up in the industry, seeing technology change throughout as he has worked on 300+ projects in fifteen countries, Sant is now always up for a new challenge. And his latest project is a feature film entitled Miracle Swing, with director Joshua Kissi, which is about golfer Calvin Peete.
