Some in the media have suggested the remedy to the Browns anemic offense is for Kevin Stefanski to turn play calling over to offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey. Stefanski has had a firm grip on that apple since 2020, and he is not going to give it up now despite the 1-4 record and the fact the Browns’ offense ranks last in the NFL and has scored only seven touchdowns. “We look at everything every week, whether it’s scheme, personnel, or how we call it,” Stefanski said before practice Oct. 9. “There are things we know we can do better. I’m comfortable with the amount of collaboration we have right now on the headset and how we operate. That won’t change. “But I do want to emphasize we are constantly looking at things we can do better. This is a collective effort from the players and coaches to make sure we’re playing better on offense.” One play in particular was scrutinized in the 34-6 loss to the Commanders on Oct. 6. Deshaun Watson says the problem isn't the plays Kevin Stefanski is calling. The problem is he and the offense aren't executing them properly. #Browns pic.twitter.com/6qRe3eBBm2 — Jeff Schudel (@jsproinsider) October 9, 2024 The Browns had first-and-goal on the Washington 7 on their first possession of the third quarter. Amari Cooper and Jerry Jeudy ran a crossing pattern at the 2. Two Washington defenders followed Cooper. Jeudy was left wide open in the end zone like a cabin isolated on five acres of prairie in Montana, but Deshaun Watson did not see him despite solid protection. Eventually, the protection broke down and Watson was sacked for one yard. “That’s definitely one (I would like back),” Watson said before practice. “It was just one of the times that I missed Jerry. I don’t want to give the route away, but it was a route that he had different options for, and I second-guessed it and kind of predetermined where he was going to go. “At this position, no one’s perfect. No one’s going to always make the right reads. So, you can nit-pick one play here and there. I can’t remember how much we were down by, but try to get all of it back at once. Doing too much. And, yeah, I take full responsibility for that.” As if the struggling offense isn’t enough of a problem for the Browns as they continue their preparation to face the Eagles on Oct. 13 in Philadelphia, the injuries continue to pile up. Long snapper Charley Hughlett was placed on injured reserve Oct. 9 with a rib injury. He must miss at least four games. “I think friendly fire by one of our guys got him,” Stefanski said. Cornerback Denzel Ward (hamstring), safety Grant Delpit (concussion), running back D’Onta Foreman (ankle), safety Ronnie Hickman (ankle), tackle James Hudson (shoulder) and center Ethan Pocic (knee) did not practice Oct. 9. Stefanski said a determination will be made later in the week whether any of the injured will be able to play against the Eagles. Running back Nick Chubb is continuing to work his way back after being activated from P.U.P. (knee) last week, but Stefanski did not indicate Chubb will be added to the 53-man roster in time to face the Eagles.
