SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Crime on BART has seen a double-digit drop compared to this time last year, according to numbers released by Bay Area Rapid Transit on Wednesday. Overall crime on the transit system through the end of August is down 15% compared to the same period in 2023. This trend, BART said, includes a 10% drop in violent crime. The drop in crime on BART comes as BART has seen a significant jump in post-pandemic ridership. BART's top 10 post-pandemic ridership days were in September. Events like the Dreamforce conference and the Oakland A's final homestand helped drive a boom in riders. BART has also been implementing its "Safe and Clean Plan" in an effort to visibly boost the presence of officers on trains and in stations. San Jose 'Breaking Bad grandma' pleads guilty in opioid smuggling case "The drop in criminal activity on BART is happening as we have been going all out to implement our Safe and Clean Plan," said BART General Manager Bob Powers. "Our riders have been loud and clear that they want us to step our game up when it comes to their safety and the cleanliness of our system." "Since I became BART Police Chief one year ago, it has been my top priority to maximize the number of officers walking trains and patrolling our stations," said BART Police Chief Kevin Franklin. "Our officers are more visible than ever. Their efforts are containing relatively small concerns before they grow into big problems that harm service." Among the crimes that saw a year-over-year drop on BART were rape, robbery, aggravated assault, larceny and auto burglary, auto theft and arson. Only structural burglary saw an increase, in this case, of 50%. The homicide rate on BART remained flat year-over-year, according to statistics provided by the BART Police Department.
