SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) - The trial of a Chatham County mother who is accused of killing her young son is beginning with jury selection Wednesday. Two years ago, Leilani Simon was arrested after investigators found the remains of her 20-month-old son, Quinton, in a Chatham County landfill. Leilani Simon had originally reported her son missing to the Chatham County Police Department (CCPD) a month earlier.  In a news conference, CCPD shared that they had found evidence that pointed to Leilani Simon being responsible for Quinton's disappearance.  "From A to Z, we were 100% committed to bringing justice for Quinton, and we believed that this was the right move today to be able to do that. She doesn't deserve a Thanksgiving, quite frankly. If I can go off script a bit, Quinton deserves that," said Chatham County Police Chief Jeffrey Hadley at the time. Federal court rejects Murdaugh’s appeal that 40 years is too harsh for stealing millions Superior Court Judge Tammy Stokes will preside over the trial. Leilani Simon is currently facing 19 charges, including malice and felony murder.   The defense for Simon has sought to dismiss the initial charges of malice murder and felony murder. The defense argued that the indictment lacked specifics on how Quinton was killed and that lack of information hindered her ability to prepare a defense. The request was denied by Stokes who emphasized that Leilani Simon is aware of the state's intention to prove intentional homicide.   Additionally, Leilani Simon's team requested to void four counts of making false statements, related to her concealment of disposing of Quinton's body and her drug use. Stokes ruled that Leilani Simon's responses to the police were intentional attempts to mislead the investigation, allowing the charges to proceed.  Jury selection was expected to begin at 9 a.m. Opening statements are expected to occur on Monday. Cameras will not be in the courtroom during the jury selection, however, it's expected they will be allowed during the rest of the trial.
