NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — In anticipation of Hurricane Milton's landing, the Blood Center is urging individuals to donate to Florida's supply. Blood Center officials mark this as the second time in almost two weeks that their supply will take a hit following Hurricane Helene. It was noted that power outages, damaged roads and flooding have prevented centers in the affected states from collecting donations. Centers nationwide have partnered together to provide support. “Donating blood is a simple yet powerful way for our community to directly impact the lives of those in need and assist our neighbors who have been affected by these devastating storms,” said Billy Weales, President and CEO of The Blood Center. “The need for blood and blood components is continuous and does not subside during disasters or recovery.” Weales said the time to act is now to ensure support for local patients and assist Florida residents and victims of Helene. Medical Director for The Blood Center, Dr. Tim Peterson says type O blood and platelet donations will be especially critical to help in the coming days. Dry weather, mild temperatures expected for northern Gulf Coast next several days  “We urge everyone to donate now and in the days ahead to ensure we have the resources to support patients across the Gulf Coast and beyond," said Peterson.
