GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — The Guilford County Sheriff's Office held a press conference on Wednesday morning to discuss the investigation into the shooting death of a former football player at Clemson University. Diondre Overton, 26, was a wide receiver and cornerback at Page High School before attending Clemson University. Throughout his career at Clemson, he scored seven touchdowns, gained 777 yards receiving and caught 52 passes. He averaged 14.9 receptions, according to ESPN. During the press conference, investigators described Overton's death as a "senseless and reckless event." On Sept. 7 around 2:30 a.m., deputies responded to a call about a loud party and noise disturbance at the 3200 block of Spring Mill Road. Deputies then learned of a shooting at the scene. Overton was identified as the shooting victim and pronounced dead at the scene. On Sunday, investigators with the GCSO's Major Crimes Unit obtained a warrant for 20-year-old Jeremiah Diago Blanks for felony first-degree murder. With the assistance of the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Marshals Service, detectives located Blanks in Detroit and arrested him on Tuesday. He currently remains in custody in Michigan and is awaiting extradition back to North Carolina. Deputies say that there were possibly several people at the party where Overton was killed that may have witnessed the fatal shooting and are encouraging anyone with information to come forward and speak with GCSO or Crime Stoppers. Investigators say the location where Overton was killed at was an Airbnb at the time of the shooting. The owner of the home was sub-leasing the residence and was not aware of how the home was being used at that time. The investigation remains ongoing.
