FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — Students at Adams Elementary School are back in class after spending Wednesday morning taking the journey around the block for the school's first-ever Peace Walk. Over 300 students, staff and neighbors marched out of the school's gym, guided by the Snider High School drum line, down the street and around the block. Held over the heads of many elementary participants were hand-made signs. Hearts, butterflies and flowers sketched in crayon echoed marcher's chants as they walked - that peace begins with them, the students. Organizers of the walk said they were inspired by Alive Community Outreach's Peacemaker Academy programs. While the academies are aimed at high schoolers, Principal Allison Holland said she believes education on kindness and empathy should begin at early ages. "If we can get [students] to understand how they contribute to [community] peace and what peace actually means and what it feels like," Holland said. "Then, when they get to high school they already have that understanding and they can bring that peace to their environment there" Holland said she hopes this walk is the beginning of more activities that unify students. She stated the school plans to follow this event with a peace dinner next month. Adams Elementary School held a peace walk on Wednesday. Over 300 students, staff and community members joined the walk. Many students held hand-made signs. For more information on Fort Wayne Community School event, visit the organization's website.
