FARGO, ND (KXNET) — A St. Michael man pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court to three counts of Child Abuse in Indian country. According to court documents, on February 18, 2023, 29-year-old Collin Ray Delorme Sr.'s co-defendant, Kenzie Rose Baker, called 911 from a home on the Spirit Lake Reservation and reported a one-year-old who was not breathing. The child was brought to CHI St. Alexius in Devils Lake and was pronounced dead. The autopsy showed that the cause of death was "battered child" — there were multiple, repeated injuries of various ages found during external and internal examination. The internal injuries were not treated and caused infection and sepsis. Baker admitted that she saw swelling for two weeks, but didn't seek medical care. After the child died, Delorme claimed an external injury happened when he misjudged a step, his boot slipped and a flashlight hit the child. Clean up begins: NDDEQ shares disaster remediation information Two charges are related to Delorme's abuse and the resulting death of the child. The third charge is related to Delorme's abuse of a second child, who was three years old. Delorme is scheduled for sentencing on February 18, 2025, and is facing a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison. In August 2024, Baker pleaded guilty to charges of Accessory after the Fact, Child Abuse in Indian country, and Child Neglect in Indian country. Her sentencing is scheduled for January 22, 2025. "Today's guilty plea is a step towards accountability for the heartrending death of a young child," said United States Attorney Mac Schneider. "The way this toddler was treated was horrific and shameful. Whether it is at multi-disciplinary team meetings throughout the District of North Dakota or by holding child abusers accountable in federal court, our career prosecutors and partners in law enforcement are committed to protecting kids and preventing tragic cases like this one."
