BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- "I'm sorry, he's not here to defend himself, but I'm going to just let it out," frustrated Arvin Mayor Pro Tem Susana Reyes said. It's been three months since Arvin city councilman Juan Murillo was last seen in his seat. The position, still vacant, and questions remain on how to proceed after Murillo submitted a resignation letter. A letter mayoral candidate Olivia Calderon says Murillo later rescinded. "Mr. Murillo has made it clear that he was in communication with the City Manager and the City Clerk and his absences were approved," the Arvin Mayor candidate said. But Mayor Pro Tem Susana Reyes, responding with a strong stance regarding Murillo's absence. "The last meeting he was here was July the 7th. Other than that, he has not shown up for any other meeting, he has not taken any concern, anything when it comes to the city. He's part of a committee, he has not shown up once to that committee," said Mayor Pro Tem Susana Reyes. "If I really wanted my seat, if I resigned from here and I rescinded my letter of resignation, then you'd be sure I'd be damn standing right here wanting my job back." 17 news has tried to reach Juan Murillo multiple times, but there has been no response. Moving forward, City Attorney Nathan Hodges made a clear recommendation to the council. "The recommendation would be to give staff direction on whether to schedule a special meeting for the day after the election in case one of those two council members does resign," Arvin City Attorney Hodges said. "Because that would give the council the ability to appoint. And that's the last day of the 60-day window that they have to do that." A 60-day window fast approaching, and if missed, Murillo's seat would stay vacant until November of 2026. However, Councilman Tim Tarver said he did his own research, and believes elections could be held sooner. "There's two dates in 2025. One is March 4th of 2025, the other one is November 4th of 2025," Tarver said. And again asked Attorney Hodges to ask Kern County Elections for more information. Bringing the council to table the item and also wait to consider Mayor Daniel Borreli's input in the situation. For now, no end in sight for Arvin Council's shakeup.
