BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- The oil company responsible for contaminating the water of central Bakersfield businesses this summer has filed for bankruptcy. Documents obtained by 17 News show Griffin Resources LLC filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last week. This announcement came after the City of Bakersfield sued Griffin in August for a backflow of oil into the city water system, which contaminated the water of dozens of businesses in early June. The City is requesting that Griffin pay for all resulting damages. City Attorney Ginny Gennaro told 17 News she's disappointed by the bankruptcy filing -- as it will delay any recovery--if any--by the city and any other injured party. Officials say 19 businesses have filed claims of damages with the City from the leak. 17 News has been reaching out to Griffin Resources since June and finally heard from the company's bankruptcy lawyer, who says this move is all about seeking assistance in reorganizing business activities.
