WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — An Austin man was sentenced Wednesday related to the death of a 14-year-old boy in 2022, according to the Williamson County District Attorney’s Office. The DA’s Office said a jury found 28-year-old Leandro Brito-Martinez guilty of murder in the vehicular homicide of Tobias Soto. Leandro Brito-Martinez (Williamson County Photo) Williamson County court documents showed Brito-Martinez was given a sentence of 80 years in prison. The range of punishments was 15 to 99 years or life in prison. PAST COVERAGE | Round Rock Police: Young pedestrian killed after being hit by vehicles after crash On July 31, 2022, Round Rock police found a stolen vehicle and attempted to initiate a stop. The stolen vehicle, which was driven by Brito-Martinez, began to quickly weave through traffic, reaching speeds of nearly 100 mph, the release said. After a short period, the vehicle ran a red light, hit another car in the intersection, and then hit and killed Soto, who was walking in the intersection, according to county officials. Brito-Martinez then ran from the scene but was caught and arrested by Round Rock Police officers, the release said. District Attorney Shawn Dick stated after the verdict, “Our hearts go out to Tobias’ mother and family, as well as all of the first responders and witnesses to this horrific event.  Any case involving the death of a child takes an immeasurable toll. "This conviction is a testament to the tireless efforts of our law enforcement and prosecution teams. Brito-Martinez’s actions resulted in a senseless tragedy, and today’s verdict ensures he is held accountable. My office remains committed to seeking justice for victims and their families.”
