I write to share some of the many reasons why Summit County residents would be well-served to elect Megan McKenna to the County Council. I am a transplant, having lived here part time for 22 years and full time for four. Megan, by contrast, has resided in Summit County and has devoted herself to this area nearly her entire life. Her life-long commitment is a distinguishing qualification. While attending Treasure Mountain Middle School, Megan worked with teachers and fellow students to help save the wetlands behind the school. Those wetlands remain an important local resource today, as does Megan.  At Park City High, Megan was again inspired by teachers, to the point that she went on to earn a master’s degree in science education and returned to teach environmental sciences at the high school. That was a true display of commitment to the community.Megan wanted to continue living in her hometown, which is a daunting financial challenge, especially on a teacher’s salary. She was fortunate to be awarded the opportunity of affordable housing in Park City Heights. She later decided to repay her good fortune by taking on the position of housing advocate with the Mountainlands Community Housing Trust, a non-profit serving the Wasatch Back. She is now an expert in affordable housing, one of the key issues facing the County Council. The issue has far-reaching implications not only for workers, businesses and all community members, but also for the local environment, as appropriate housing can reduce commuting, traffic and emissions. Megan’s expertise in both housing and environmental sciences makes her uniquely qualified to serve on the council.Like the wetlands she helped protect, and the many students she inspired as a teacher, Megan McKenna is a local treasure. All of Summit County would benefit from electing her to the County Council.Rick WallacePark CityThe post Life of service appeared first on Park Record.
