(Photo by Terry Pierson, The Press-Enterprise/SCNG) Expand Summit quarterback Arianna Munoz threw four touchdown passes and had two spectacular connections with Kamryn Ellis who made diving catches to lead the SkyHawks (13-5 overall, 10-0 in league). Summit’s victory snapped San Gorgonio’s 13-game winning streak. The Spartans are now 13-4, 8-2. Munoz displayed a strong arm and threw a tight spiral throughout the long afternoon. “I barely learned how to throw a football,” Munoz said. “I play softball, so I already knew the motion. But learning how to throw a football is so much more difficult.” Munoz only joined the team because her friend Clarissa Leon is playing. “This felt good because we were so nervous for this game because we want to come out on top,” Munoz said. “Now we feel very accomplished.” Among Ellis’ diving grabs in the second game of the doubleheader was a skidding catch from 21 yards out to put Summit ahead 18-0. “I play basketball, too, so that comes in handy,” Ellis said. “It’s just my confidence. I feel like if I see a ball, I can catch it.” Preventing Summit from notching a shutout in the second game was San Gorgonio’s Jazmin Benson who returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown. “I just read the quarterback’s eyes and kept the receiver in front of me,” Benson said. “It didn’t feel great – we were already losing.” Also not clicking his heels was San Gorgonio coach Matt Spoelstra. “It’s a bummer to have a 13-game win streak and then to lose twice,” Spoelstra said. “But their No. 18 (Munoz) and No. 2 (Ellis) were incredible. It was hard to stop them.” Related Articles High School Sports | Santiago girls golf team beats Roosevelt, takes control in Big VIII League High School Sports | Moreno Valley flag football team tops Canyon Springs in Sunbelt League action High School Sports | Inland girls athlete of the week: Samantha Durant, Arlington High School Sports | Inland boys athlete of the week: Koa Regalado, Colton High School Sports | Inland girls golf notes: Another strong year for the freshman class As the Summit players packed up their Senior Night goodies, SkyHawks coach Adrieanna Hooks analyzed the matchup. “We had to contain their quarterback (Benson),” Hooks said. “I think we did a good job of that.” Summit picked off six passes on the warm afternoon. Also scoring touchdowns for Summit were Alani Lopez (two), Audina Soto, and Morghan Davis. San Gorgonio’s Ava Bogarin had a beautiful 33-yard touchdown catch from Benson in the first game. “I read the quarterback and the defender and just sprinted,” Bogarin said. “I was in the clear and I couldn’t wait to get the ball.”
